History of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Creation and Concept

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird in 1983. The concept started as a joke when Eastman drew a masked turtle with nunchucks to make Laird laugh. They decided to create a comic book parodying popular elements in superhero comics at the time. The first issue was published in 1984 by Mirage Studios and was a surprise success.
